Drumond Park’s recently refreshed Don’t Laugh! board game (rrp £19.99, age 8 to adult, for 2-4 players) is a real challenge of a very different kind … It’s a hysterically funny game where the Joke Teller does his or her very best to make you and your fellow opponents laugh so that they can gain points, move around the board and win the day! The only way for you to win is to hold firm, keep a straight, poker face and simply, completely and utterly NOT laugh – or even crack a smile – however much you’re provoked!
As the game is aimed at children and adults aged 8 and over I thought it would be perfect for Ryan and Jordanna to play once little Izebella was in bed.
The game box is much smaller than other board games too meaning it fits quite snuggle in our cupboard. The game box contains the board game which again is quite small. Also in the box are 4 playing pieces, a funny sound maker and 100 double sided joke cards.
The sound maker is in the shape of a microphone although it’s not actually a working microphone but more of a prop with buttons which make all sorts of funny sounds. It also has the timer on it.
The game board spaces contain various icons which correspond to the funny noises on the microphone.
The instructions say that youngest should start, this being Jordanna. Each player takes a joke card and reads any one of the 3 jokes. Then presses the timer and tries to make their opponents laugh by pressing the funny sound corresponding to the icon they land on. These icons and sounds are Fart, Laughter and Funny Phrase. There are quite a few different sounds for each one rather than just the same one each time.
In this short video. Ryan demonstrates the funny sounds inbetween our game play. Whilst trying to keep a straight face his self.
The idea of the game is to make your opponents laugh after telling a joke and there is only 10 seconds on the timer to do this.
If any opponents laugh then the player moves one space per each player who laughs or even smiles.
There are also Joker icons and if a player lands on one of these then they can tell there own joke and move forward more spaces.
The winner is first to the finish space.
The game needs no dice. The noise maker needs 3AAA batteries.
The joke cards are all double sided and each side has 3 jokes meaning plenty of jokes to keep going before the same one is read out again. The jokes all seem child friendly, no rude ones. Some of them funny, some make no sense at all. They can be read out how you wish. I found reading in funny voice with a funny face made my two kids roll around with laughter before the timer was even pressed. It’s not hard to guess that Mummy won the first few rounds.
