There’s something fishy going on!

Fish is a very healthy food. Fish is a superfood. Packed with vitamins and minerals, and a major source of omega-3 fatty acids, fish can help to protect against a range of diseases, from cancer to heart disease, depression to arthritis.
Sadly many people (adults & children) do not eat enough fish in their diets. Some people eat none at all. This can be down to not liking fish and not realising that there are many different varieties of fish out there. Also many people (me included) dislike handling raw fish, the smell or feel of it or just simply not knowing what to do with it.

That’s where the tinned varieties come in!

John West is a name many adults will be very familiar with. They have been around for years starting in 1857 braving the roughest seas and harshest conditions to bring quality fish products to the table. Many will recall family cupboards always having a tin of John West tuna and sardines stored inside when younger. The sardines were my dads favourite and from what I remember the tins are still pretty much the same today.

A big box full of John West fish products arrived at my door last week. It’s a good job I am a lover of fish or I would not know what to do with it all.
Included in my box was the sardines (as above) along with some tuna tins, mackerel fillets, salmon and some new tuna products too.

My favourite is the mackerel fillets which come in a variety of flavoured options or alone in oil.

They taste great in a sandwich or on toast and make a lovely light lunch or even supper.

Mackerel along with sardines and pilchards are classed as oily fish meaning higher concentrations of Omega 3. As the fish is already prepared all I have to do is open the tin and scoop out, meaning no touching the fish or difficult preparation.
Sardines also taste great on toast and can make an enjoyable breakfast.

John West tuna tins now come as “No drain” meaning even less mess all round. Previously when using tins of tuna I would have to carefully open the tin and then drain off whatever liquid the fish was in but not anymore with the new tins.
Tuna comes in tins of both flakes and more chunkier steak pieces. It’s a very versatile food item which can be made into many things.

Tuna sandwiches always go down well and tuna with jacket potatoes provides a more filling but healthy meal. Tinned tuna can also be used to create home made fish cakes and lots of other simple or more creative family recipes.

The new tuna products include the Steam pots which are like a healthy ready meal. They come with 2 pots, one being cous cous and a pot of tuna infusions. The meal is made by simply adding hot water and mixing. Again no messing with fish and same great taste.

These steam pots could easily be taken to work as they are very easy to make.

The Infusions Tuna pots really caught my eye. They are small pots of “no drain” tuna infused with carefully selected herbs and come in 5 varieties. It’s a change from eating just tuna and the flavours are lovely and strong.
I enjoy eating pasta with tuna and this time went for the Lemon & Thyme infusion

IMG_0060.JPG
These infusion pots are really handy for both pasta dishes and salads and save the need to add herbs which many people normally would.
Izebella enjoys her pasta and tuna too. However I thought the infusions may be a little too strong for her so used the tuna steak for her instead.

For a quick and easy lunch on the go there is the John West tuna light lunch.

This is a ready made tuna pasta salad all in the convenience of an easy open compact tin which can be simply popped in a bag and opened and eaten straight from the tin.

Tuna is packed with protein and will also give you a good dose of iron and potassium. It’s very healthy containing literally no fat and low in calories.

Salmon is actually the first fish caught by John West. It comes in varieties of both pink and red. Pink being more milder and delicate and red being richer.
Salmon has a distinct taste of it’s own. It does not taste like any other fish but again there are many dishes that I can make with it.

I enjoy salmon with potatoes and green beans.

Salmon salad is also delicious but October is a little cold for salads.

I am enjoying using all my fish products. Both me and Jordanna are fish lovers. Izebella will eat tuna. Sadly I have not managed to convert Ryan I to trying fish yet he is way too fussy.

John West fish products can be found just about anywhere, in every supermarket and many stores and even corner shops. No prices here as every shop is different. More information along with some tasty looking recipes can be found at the John West website
