There’s no denying that you’ve got virtually unlimited choices when it comes to decorating the interior of your home. Some people go for specific themes in each room, while others might prefer a more neutral look across their homes.
Whatever your style choices, you’ll undoubtedly wish to make the right decorating attempts from the start. Before you begin transforming the look of any room in your home, are there any decorating mistakes that you should avoid?
In short, the answer is yes! Don’t worry, because you don’t need to memorise a whole heap of things before you embark on any home decorating project. There are only a few simple ‘golden rules’ to bear in mind. They are as follows:
Don’t forget about scale and proportion
Before you slap any paint or wallpaper on your walls, the first thing you should do is consider the relationship between the objects in each room you redecorate. For example, it doesn’t make sense to have lots of big things in a tiny room, such as a box bedroom.
Are you going for a complete revamp and chucking away your furniture and furnishings? If so, consider scale and proportion before you buy any home decor and homewares items. Doing so will save you a whole world of pain and frustration!
Think about the function of each room
What exactly is the purpose or ‘function’ of each room you intend to redecorate in your room? As weird as it sounds, many people forget that simple question and turn some rooms in their homes into entirely pointless ones!
For instance, are you someone that spends almost all of their time reading books in the living room? If so, it’s pointless having a widescreen 4K TV with cinematic surround sound speakers in it!
Instead, you can arrange the space in your living room to have functional bookshelves, so you’ve always got plenty of reading material at your disposal. And, you won’t have a big TV taking up valuable wall space.
Consider the brightness of each room
Have you noticed that some rooms in your home are brighter than the others during the day? You should bear that fact in mind when choosing colour schemes for paint and wallpaper. After all: you don’t want to go for a dark theme in a poorly-lit room.
On the flip side of the coin, you don’t have to go mad with bright and vibrant colour schemes. Think about using some well-placed LED lights, such as floor standing lamps, to help keep generally dark rooms bright, whatever the light levels outside.
Always buy paint tester pots
Finally, did you know that one of the most significant home decorating mistakes many people make is buying large (and often expensive) tins of paint without getting tester pots first? Imagine spending £50 on premium paint only to discover it is a terrible colour when it’s dried!
That’s why it makes sense to invest in small tester pots first. They don’t cost much to buy, and the paint contained in them is the same as the larger 2.5-litre or five-litre tins.
Good luck!
