3 Ways to Encourage Your Child to Read More

In today’s digital world, getting kids to do anything other than look at a screen can be nothing short of tough. With the lure of constant stimulation coming from technology, many parents find themselves struggling to get their children to read.

Yet, reading is a fundamental part of a fulfilling life. It doesn’t just enhance your knowledge and educate you about the history of your culture; it can enhance your imagination and even improve the way that you communicate.

Encouraging your child to read more is one of the most valuable tools you can give them as a parent. If you’re having trouble getting your kid to take an interest in reading, here are some tips you might want to try.

Create a Reading-Friendly Space

Perhaps one of the reasons why your child isn’t drawn to a book is because there are so many other temptations surrounding the reading material. Create an environment where books are easily grabbed and a part of your daily life.

Fill your home with all sorts of different books that are appropriate for your child’s age. Perhaps more important is a space where reading is encouraged and cozy. A little reading nook is a great way to get your child to pick up a book and take an interest in it. Keep books all over the place, whether it’s in the bathroom or in the kitchen so that it’s a go-to activity they love.

Lead by Example

If you’re telling your child they should read more, yet you’re on your phone, then they’re not going to see the logic behind your advice!  After all, if reading is so great, then why aren’t they seeing their parents do more of it?

Lead by example and you’re more likely to see your children following suit. Beyond reading to your child, make time to read alongside them. Taking time every day to read and discuss the stories you’re all exploring is a great way to encourage family reading. By modeling a positive attitude towards reading, you’ll see your child imitate this attitude and appreciate reading that much more.

Make it Fun

Reading doesn’t have to be something boring or quiet. It can be downright fun and interactive if you know how to do it right!

Let your child engage as you read books and allow them to ask questions. Many parents make the mistake of discouraging their child from interrupting the story, when in fact this can take all the fun out of story time!

Allow your child to predict what might happen next, or help you make voices for each of the characters. Keeping them engaged will help them take an interest in the storyline, and encourage them to be more of a storyteller in life.
