Gifts for teens & big boys from Find me a Gift

Published December 7, 2017 by Bizzimummy

Don’t you just love the novelty fun Christmas gifts, the ones that bring back memories from years gone by or perhaps something so silly but we can’t help but love it? Well Find me a Gift is full of those type of gift ideas.

We all know that teens and some of us grown up kids at heart love the retro gadgets. Well how about one of these in the stocking for just £12.99.

This being a plug and play retro TV game console. Yes it’s a console, it’s tiny and all I needed to do was plug it in. You do need a television with the correct connectors or an adaptor if it doesn’t have one .

For £12.99 I wasn’t expecting much at all, definitely nothing like the PS4 and Xbox of today. It does beat a few similarities to the old Atari system.

The main interface certainly resembles the old consoles of the 1980s, very basic and in menu form like the above. There are 200 games on this tiny system, some of them can be quite temperamental, again just like the old consoles.

This game here looks quite familiar!

Playing the games is done by the console. The plug in lead isn’t huge so it does mean sitting close to the screen to play (no witless here). I don’t think it would be much of a hit with teens as they all prefer the much faster consoles of today. I would say it’s more for the big boys, Dads, granddads who want to relive their memories of old style gaming.

I think this next product is perhaps much more suited to a teenager.

Keeping with the whole retro and gaming theme. This is of course a Tetris light based on the old highly addictive Tetris game. I’d spend ages dropping blocks, trying to get to higher levels back in the day.

The light comes as seven individual coloured plastic blocks. They can be built up in multiple ways to make different patterns. The blue block is the base block providing the main charge to the rest. It comes with a mains adaptor.

It’s quite impressive at how the light works. Only one block is connected to the mains, yet when other coloured blocks are built up, each one of them also lights up. Then as each block is removed, the light instantly goes off.

The one negative I have is that the light is very light and easily knocked over. It’s also tempting to play with it and constantly rearrange the lights. Tetris light costs £22.99.

Tomy Screwball Scramble

Published October 9, 2017 by Bizzimummy

Oh just WOW! I could hardly believe my eyes when I spotted this game. It is one of my childhood favourites, before the era of video games and a time when mobile phones were totally unheard of.

This is Screwball scramble from Tomy toys . I had it as a child and it hasn’t really changed much at all.

In fact, apart from the odd colour change here and there, they are pretty much identical. However I am sure I recall having to manually assemble the old one where as the new one comes ready assembled, only needing the timer slotting in.

The game is played with silver metal balls. Only two come in the box, and I have a feeling these will be lost within a few weeks in this house but they seem easy enough to buy elsewhere.

The game is easy, it’s a solo play game, meaning one player at a time. Each player needs to complete the scramble maze before the timer runs out. It’s not easy, I have not mastered it myself yet, despite being masterclass when younger. It takes a lot of practice and a bit of frustration to master it in time.

The way to play is by pressing or turning the various buttons which each one correspond to one of the many obstacles. The player flip, roll and bounce the ball along each obstacle before finally getting to the end and hitting the finish bell, and all before the timer runs out.

If you also played this game way back in the 1980s then you will probably also want to rush out and buy it for your own children too. Prices start from £15.00 from The Entertainer, Smyths, Toys r Us, Amazon and other toy stores. Ages 5 and over.

Retro Top Trumps for Halloween

Published October 3, 2017 by Bizzimummy

Is it a bad thing, that until just a few months ago, I had absolutely no idea how Top Trumps was played?

Then one day my son got a set of football themed Top Trump cards and taught me the rules. Well I didn’t really need much teaching, it’s so easy that anyone can play.

Top Trumps playing cards have taken on so many themes, from football to well known characters and now something completely new.

As it’s October, meaning Halloween, those themes are of course horror and also a fantasy pack. These are part of retro/nostalgic Top Trumps collection at Winning Moves UK.

These cards all come inside their own tough plastic casing which stores the cards so much better than the cardboard boxes.

The cards are fabulous for Halloween parties and get togethers. There are two horror theme packs. The packs contain 30 cards all with an image of an horrific scary character of some form.

Underneath the images are four attributes. These attributes are the same for both horror packs so they can be mixed or all played together if there are lots of players.

The cards get dealt between all the players. This game seems to work better and faster with more players. The starting player names the character on the card and then chooses one of the four attributes. So for instance in the 3 cards above I played the Slime creature and chose horror rating which has a score of 86. Ryan played the beast, instantly beating me with 98 and Jordanna the jailer with 68. So Ryan wins the round. Keeps the three cards and then his turn to play the card. He carries on playing the first card over and over until one of us trumps him again and the play passes to us etc. The winner is the one who ends up with all the cards in the end.

Two players can play but the game takes a whole lot longer. There is no maximum player limit.

I do love the horror packs but found the fantasy pack very appealing. The fantasy pack is a different game to the horror pack as the attributes are different. The characters based on fantasy with a few alternate scary characters include such as fairy, wizard, mermaid etc.

All Top Trump packs seem to have a “boss” type card. It isn’t called the boss card but by this I mean a card with very high attributes that usually trumps the majority of other cards. For the fantasy game it’s the king card.

He has maximum strength and skill, and almost maximum on the other two attributes too. He may seem unbeatable and so the player lucky enough to be dealt this card may be presumed a definite winner, but this is not always the case. The

See if a player draws the dragon on their play, and chooses fear factor then they steal the king card. If they choose strength it’s then a draw and all cards get placed in a pile in the middle of the players and a new round is started. The player of the new round then takes this pile and the winning cards of the new round.

I never knew card games could be this much fun.

The retro top trumps collection consists of six themed packs. The fantasy and horror being three packs from this. They cost just £4.99 each pack and can provide hours of entertainment and family play. They are great for taking away too.

Back to School: Beano shop

Published August 23, 2017 by Bizzimummy

Love it or hate it, old or young! Everyone had heard of or seen a Beano comic. Beano is older than my parents, it began back in the 1930s with thousands of comics and apparel being produced worldwide. The most famous character of course being Dennis the Menace and his sidekick dog Gnasher. Other notable characters include Minnie the Minx and Billy Whizz.

My dad was a keen fan of the Beano when younger back in the 1950s. My brother liked it too, throghout the 1980s and my younger brother through the late 1990s so it’s certainly here to stay. Beano does seem aimed more towards boys than girls so it was never really my thing growing up, but my 13 year old son does enjoy comic books and does enjoy Beano merchandise too.

Did you know Beano has its own store? where you can buy comic subscriptions and lots of Beano themed products? Well they sure do and they have a few Back to School items for the young Beano fans.

Yes they have a Beano bag, notebooks and even a pencil case full of Beano stationery.

These items can be purchased individually but if you purchase the Back to School pack for just £24.99 then you save about £7.00.

This is a must for any Beano fan, but watch out boys and girls, I guarantee there are many dads who will be wanting these too!

Memorable Toys Boutique

Published August 4, 2017 by Bizzimummy

Memorable toys are a family-run online toy boutique based in Ireland. They sell quality wooden toys along with educational and traditional toys.Toys that children can create lasting memories with.
All of my children were each sent a lovely toy over suitable for their ages.

Izebella was absolutely thrilled with her new toy – A wooden lunch set! She loves this type of thing, ie pretend play, cooking, tea parties etc. This is one of Memorable toys wooden toy sets too. It contains 36 pieces and all but two are made with wood.

This set includes play food, a big plate, cutlery, napkin and a menu. The menu gives images and Izebella can find the correct pieces to go on the plates or she can just invent her own dishes. She has her own play cooker, fridge and sink sets but was lacking in play food so this set has really come in useful for her little kitchen arrangement.
Ryan, being the scientist in the house, has his very own Putty peeps lab kit. It comes with putty, colour dyes, glitters and containers.

This is for kids ages 8 and over. It’s a weird type of puttt that doesn’t dry out and can be stretched, shaped and pulled. When it’s left for a while it goes all slimy but not wet if that makes sense and then when it’s played with again it’s back to normal. Its strange stuff.

The idea is to put it in the containers and add various colours and shiny effects to it. It’s not something I’d have a go at myself but Ryan of course loves it.
Finally Jordanna has the Rory’s story cubes fantasy edition.

This is one of the newer editions to the Rory cube franchise. I have myself never played  the cubes before and was surprised at just how interesting the games can be.

There are nine cubes with 6 different images. In this set, the images are based on fantasy characters, homes and accessories so there are princesses and castles and also frogs and the odd ogre.

There is no set rule on how to play this game and no limit on players. It’s for most ages too, even the younger ones can join in.

Each player throws all nine dice and then creates a story beginning with “once upon a time” using all nine images. It’s not as easy as it sounds but it’s fun and encourages kids to use their imagination, especially so with it being a fantasy edition. It can also get very silly at times. Just as there are no set rules, there are also no real winners or losers, unless you create a game where someone can win.

The cubes all come in a cute little magnetic locking case too making it a great game for traveling or bedtime stories.

You can buy these toys and many more at Memorable toys. Prices are in Euros.

Choc nibbles & win some!

Published June 19, 2017 by Bizzimummy

I’m sure most of us parents who grew up in the 1980s/90s will remember these!

The memories of coming out of school and straight into the local shop to buy a quarter of choc nibbles  for 30p with left over dinner money or (if we were lucky!) pocket money.

I loved and still love choc nibbles. If you don’t remember them, then maybe you just didn’t get out much. The best way to describe them is like a mixture of soft caramel, mixes with choc lick (another old favourite) and maybe a bit of ground biscuit and something else, then coated with chocolate and made into little sticks which taste delicious.

It’s a shame how most corner shops have changed over the years, I loved looking at all the plastic sweet jars behind shop counters frantically browsing for the choc nibs.

Although the shops may have changed and the majority of the cheap sweets in big jar memories are long gone, I am happy to say that Choc Nibbles are still around and here to stay.

You see I have discovered a place on the internet that loves those old fashioned chocolate sweets just as much as I do, it’s even called Choc nibbles. Their tasty treats aren’t available via the website but their are several stockists around the UK, including one just a few minutes away from me.

The choc nibs can be purchased as jars or in bags or from sweet shops by measure.

I never understood what exactly a quarter was, which we all would ask for as kids. A quarter of what exactly? Who knows but it was always a pretty big paper bag full.

The bags contain 250g of sweets, yes even the measurements have changed over the years.

These taste just like I remember. It is possibly the only thing that hasn’t changed about the nibbles over the years.

They also make a slightly different variety too.

These are similar in taste but appear to have been a little jazzed up with an extra shiny chocolate coating giving them a smoother and brighter appearance. Thus less cocoa powder on the hands like the original version.

They do a few other versions of chocolate nibbles too such as toffee crumble nibbles and a Jammie version too. Also original choc lick, remember the chocolate dust stuff in white paper bags, that we dipped wet fingers in and licked off? Then by the time half had gone the bag got soggy and we ended up with chocolate dust all over our white tops! Oops!!

It’s like being a kid again with all these sweets!

A “Totally funky” Gingerbread wallet & a competition too!

Published May 8, 2017 by Bizzimummy

Well I’m a big kid at heart and love all sorts of weird, wonderful, silly and retro things. My favourite type of store (after clothing of course) is a geek/gadget type place just like Totally funky, who sell all sorts of totally funky gifts.

Now there’s a saying that good  things come in small packages or something along those lines, and just look at this for a new purse.

I chose this for a few reasons. Firstly I was in need of a new one. The old one was plain looking and worn out, my cards kept getting lost inside huge holes and coins too. And secondly – who doesn’t love an old fashioned fairytale. Yes it’s a gingerbread man themed wallet/purse whatever you wish to call it.

It is a fair bit smaller than the previous big purse thing I had but it has more than enough space to store my cards, money and small bits. There is a zip pocket inside with a few card slots and a pocket on the outside separate to the main purse part.

The wallet is decorated all the way around, both inside and out with characters from the gingerbread man story and quotes.

It is certainly unusual and also very funky. This gingerbread wallet is part of The Once Upon A Time range of bags and purses which  are based on childhood fairytales including Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White. The  enchanting designs feature simple illustrations, pretty bows, cute catchphrases and beautifubattention to detail.

The gingerbread wallet costs £19.99 and a matching satchel is also available for £39.99.

COMPETITION TIME

Totally Funky are giving away one of their very funky and rather sweet gingerbread wallets as above worth £19.99.

The giveaway is run by rafflecopter and you can enter using the link below. You must have a valid twitter, Facebook and email account and be a UK resident to enter. The giveaway will close on May 29th 2017. Onewinner will be chosen at random to win the wallet.

Making a house more of a home with The Windsor Browne/Melody Mason collection

Published May 2, 2017 by Bizzimummy

Windsor Browne is a brand created by Melody Maison to showcase items with a more quirky, industrial, earthy or gentleman’s club style.
There are all sorts of more vintage style items including furniture and accessories for the home. I have three items from this collection!

The first is a Floral French metal jug.

This may just look like an everyday type plant watering jug from the outset, and yes it can be used for plant watering but it also makes a rather pretty centre piece decoration. Either stand alone or as a flower vase like I’ve done here.

As it’s made of metal, there is little chance of it breaking or cracking and I think it looks so much prettier than the usual glass vases. It costs just under £10 and makes a perfect accessory in my newly decorated hallway.

Next is one product that I always need, but can never find. It’s a bottle opener, but one that is very unlikely to become lost.

This bottle opener is wall mounted and has a retro pub theme to it. I don’t drink beer at all but I do enjoy the odd treat of Coca Cola in glass bottles so this will come in handy. It also looks quite quirky next to my fridge too.

I did have a few problems getting this on the wall. There are two screw slots at the back but it does not come with any screws or bolts and everything I tried was either too big or too small or just did not work. In the end I had to drill a small hole through the top of it and hang it that way, but it’s up now and it’s not a huge problem.

Yes it does work, just attach a bottle lid to the metal hole and open as you would any other bottle. The metal tray thing at the bottom even catches the drips. I best make sure I remember to give it a wipe!

I’ll never be searching for a bottle opener again now this is on my kitchen wall. This one is just £10.95 but it does not come with appropriate wall fixings.

Finally a small heart wall mirror.

I have put this in my bedroom as I was lacking a wall mirror. It is fairly small at 25cms but still has quite an effect on the room. It’s frame is plastic but to look at it from a distance it looks more metallic.

I did struggle a bit to get this mirror hung too. There are 2 small hooks on the back but these seem quite flimsy and move around a lot when trying to get them onto a wall hook. I was worried about applying pressure whilst hanging it as it is quite a dainty thing which could easily be cracked if I pressed too hard. But… I now have a nice wall mirror at least.

At just £5.95 it’s not a bad price at all.

Melody mason have some many unique and very pretty items. It’s the sort of place that makes me want to buy everything. The prices are very reasonable and their items really help to turn a house into a home.

My retro gifts from Nuku

Published December 14, 2016 by Bizzimummy

Everyone knows how much I love my retro gadgets and gizmos, anything that brings back memories from the 1980s/1990s. Anyway I came across a rather cool gift website called NUKU. They sell all sorts of funky and unusual gifts and  gadgets. Stuff for the home, gifts for him, her, the kids and lots more. I really enjoyed having a browse through it all. Then I came across two items which are both really retro and things I remember from my younger years, and well; I just had to have them both.
Hands up if you remember this! 🙋

Yes it’s the old favourite – Big mouth Billy Bass or otherwise known as the singing fish. I loved these years ago, sad but true! They can be hard to come across in the modern high street gift stores these days but when I was about 11 they were everywhere, including on the walls of many homes.
If your a bit younger than myself and have no idea what this fish thing is – well it’s a novelty gadget which either gets hung on the wall or stood on a shelf via its stand. It has two on functions – sensor and not sensor. When the sensor is on it detects movement and when off it works via a press of the button.

This one plays two songs – “Don’t worry be happy” and “I will survive”. It also dances and wiggles its tail and it’s quite amusing to watch. My kids love it.

The best way to show you what it does is by making this short video of the thing in action.

And that’s the singing fish which costs £18.99 from Nuku.
Now there is one item that my bathroom has been lacking since I moved to this house and that is a toilet roll holder. Yes I have toilet roll but they usually end up sat on top of the toilet. Well all that has changed now – as I now have one and a very unusual one too.

Yes you are seeing correctly – It’s a Polaroid style toilet roll holder. Very cool and rather funky. It’s tough plastic with a removeable bar to place the toilet roll on which then goes through the Polaroid slot. Nuku even sell toilet roll with images on to make it look even more like a camera.

This comes with the relevant screws and wall plugs to hang it and I’m very impressed with myself because I managed to hang it all by myself problem free, and I am rubbish at DIY. It only took me 20 mins or so and I don’t own a drill either. This Polaroid toilet roll holder comes in two shades and cost £12.99.
Don’t you just love retro type gifts!

BuySend.com

Published September 2, 2015 by Bizzimummy

I do love gift websites. The ones that sell a bit of everything including retro, fun, kids and home items. I was recently asked by Buysend.com to have a look through their website and share my user experience.

There is a vast range of gifts and products to browse through so it’s always a good idea to have an idea of what it is you want. When first visiting the website you are greeted with several category options which does help when browsing for gifts.

Then once a category is selected it can be narrowed down with filters such as price and most popular.

I was given a choice of products to choose from and instantly knew I just had to have one of these.

Yes it’s a plasma lamp and sad but true I actually longed for one of these every Christmas of my early teenage years. I never got one tho as they were rather pricy back then.

They do come in several sizes. This what I have is the smaller size starting at approximately £21.49. There is a dragonfly image inside and the effects are pretty cool, especially at night.

It reacts to touch and can give a slight shock if you touch someone else whilst touching one of these, don’t worry, nothing too bad. It also reacts to sound. Don’t ask me how they work tho as I have no idea. I just plug it in, switch it on and watch the energy show.

You can find more details of this particular gift here along with hundreds more items.
